Dell 6-Slot Switch Chassis (model 451-BCUM) is a modular network chassis designed for datacenter and enterprise environments. It provides six modular slots for line cards and interface or uplink modules, enabling scalable network expansion and flexible port configurations. The chassis integrates centralized power distribution and cooling to simplify rack installation and supports hot-swap maintenance to minimize service interruptions during module replacement or upgrades.

Advantages

The chassis architecture allows administrators to mix and match line cards to meet changing bandwidth and interface requirements without replacing the entire system. Centralized power and cooling reduce cabling complexity and improve thermal management for high-density installations. Hot-swap capability and a modular design streamline maintenance and hardware refresh processes, while the six-slot capacity offers room for growth and redundancy planning.

Suitable for

• Core or distribution layer switching in datacenters
• Enterprise campus networks requiring modular uplinks and aggregation
• Network consolidation projects and hardware refreshes
• Rack-mounted installations where centralized power and cooling are preferred

Key specifications

• Form factor: 19-inch rack-mountable chassis designed for data center racks
• Slot count: Six modular slots for line cards and interface modules
• Power: Centralized power distribution supporting redundant power supplies (installed separately)
• Cooling: Integrated chassis cooling with multiple fan bays for airflow management
• Maintenance: Supports hot-swap of compatible modules to minimize downtime
• Compatibility: Designed to host compatible switch line cards and modules for uplinks, aggregation, and varied port types

How to use

Install the chassis into a standard rack and connect centralized power according to site power and grounding procedures. Populate the six slots with the required line cards and uplink modules that match your network design. Configure power redundancy and cooling policies as part of rack integration. Use the system management interface of the installed line cards or the controlling switch modules to provision VLANs, routing, and port configurations. When performing maintenance or upgrades, follow hot-swap procedures to remove and replace modules without powering down the entire chassis, ensuring that compatible spare modules are available and that firmware and configuration are synchronized.

Recommendations

Plan module population to balance capacity and redundancy: reserve slots for future uplink or supervision modules and separate high-density port cards across power and cooling zones. Verify compatibility of line cards and management modules with your existing network OS and fabric, and maintain updated firmware to ensure predictable interoperability. Use redundant power supplies and monitor chassis thermal sensors to preserve performance under load.
