The BROADCOM ACPL-4800-000E is an optocoupler gate driver in a DIP-8 package with a push-pull (totem-pole) DC output stage designed to provide galvanic isolation between control logic and power switching stages. It delivers isolated drive signals for power transistors and IGBTs in switching applications and supports both low-side and high-side gate drive topologies when used with appropriate external components. The device is suitable for use in motor drives, switched-mode power supplies, inverters and other applications that require reliable isolation and fast gate transitions.

Advantages

The ACPL-4800-000E integrates a totem-pole output stage for efficient push-pull drive, offering controlled output drive strength and reduced external component count compared with discrete isolation solutions. Its DIP-8 through-hole package enables straightforward prototyping and replacement in legacy boards, while the optically isolated input ensures galvanic separation between control circuits and power devices to improve system safety and reduce ground loop interference. The device supports fast switching suitable for medium-speed gate drive tasks and provides predictable electrical characteristics over typical operating conditions.

Suitable for

• Gate driving of power MOSFETs and IGBTs in motor controllers
• Isolated driver stages in switch-mode power supplies
• Inverter gate control for renewable energy and UPS systems
• General-purpose isolation between logic-level controllers and power stages

Key specifications

• Package type: DIP-8 through-hole
• Output stage: push-pull (totem-pole) DC
• Isolation method: optical galvanic isolation
• Intended function: gate drive for power transistors and IGBTs
• Switching suitability: medium-speed gate transitions
• Input type: LED-driven optocoupler input

How to use

Place the ACPL-4800-000E in a compatible DIP-8 socket or solder it into a through-hole PCB footprint following the device pinout and recommended polarity for the input LED. Connect the input LED to the control logic through an appropriate current-limiting resistor. On the output side, provide the required supply rails and connect the totem-pole outputs to the gate of the target power transistor or IGBT, adding gate resistors or Miller compensation components as needed for the specific power device and switching speed. Ensure proper creepage and clearance distances on the PCB to preserve isolation integrity and follow thermal management practices appropriate to your application.

Recommendations

Use recommended input current levels to maintain reliable LED activation and observe the device’s absolute maximum ratings. When driving high gate charge devices, select suitable gate resistors and consider external buffering or level-shifting as needed. Verify isolation requirements and maintain separation between control and power grounds; apply decoupling capacitors close to the device supply pins to minimize switching noise and improve stability.
